The growth of online video in the last few years has exploded. The ever increasing bandwidth of our online space had made this possible, but what’s fueled it is our appetite for video content. The pictured graph from Cisco illustrates this growth explosion.
It’s mind-boggling to think that in only a few short years our consumption of online video will go from 10 million terabytes in 2010 to 50 million in 2015! But its not unsurprising YouTube is now the number two search engine in the world. How many of us use Netflix? How many of us have thought about cancelling our cable and just watching media through the internet. Game of Thrones was the most pirated television series of 2012, its recent premier of Season Three was the most pirated television show ever – with more than 1 million people illegally downloading the show in only 24 hours! So you can see that our appetite for consuming video through the internet will continue to grow and grow and GROW.
Moving images have long been the most powerful medium to disseminate messaging. The combination of music, images, narration, emotion and story can have an extremely powerful impact on the intended audience in a very short time frame – much more so than the written word or static pictures. There is a reason that companies pay millions of dollars for advertising time during the Super Bowl and ask yourself how long does it take to watch a movie compared to reading a book? For a more technical explanation lets consult an expert. Dr. Susan Weinschenk is a leading expert on the psychology of online video and why its so powerful. She is a consultant for such big brands as Amazon, Disney and Walmart. In the below video she describes her 4 Reasons Why Online Video Is Persuasive.
All of this is to say that if you aren’t using online video to promote your brand or business – YOU SHOULD BE!!! The two keys that make producing your own video content such an obvious choice are COST and IMPACT. It has never been cheaper and more affordable to produce video. The emergence of DSLR cameras that can film beautiful HD images has drastically reduced the cost of making video content. We’ve already discussed the impact of video above but it is using this impact to increase your brand awareness and social media reach that is going to grow your audience and ultimately grow your business.
In my next post I’ll go over some of the different kinds of online videos and some keys to making effective video content. In the meantime feel free to contact NetVerts about how we can help create high impact, cost effective videos for you!
